Exploratory Session with Natalie Hennedige: Saturday, 10 April

Today we took part in Natalie’s exploratory. It was a very intense and active working process partly because there were only two of us taking part. We entered the room and launched straight into practical working with a text – no introductions. The text was written by Natalie and was a composed from a mixture of found sources. “The eyes of the world are upon you.” “He was banished by his wife Sita.”

We went into two hours of structured working with this text and Natalie introduced accumulating layers of possibilities. Initially we sat at a table and spoke the text alternately, using table chairs and moving ourselves in relation to these and each other. We then extended the improvisation to include the entire room, the windows and walls. We went further with this when Natalie asked us to use the objects in the room to construct a wasteland. Natalie also introduced a sequence of actions which we were to perform; walk, run, roll, crawl, laugh. We were then each given characters to take into the improvisation; Jesus Christ and a suicide bomber. Finally we were asked to interrogate/interview each other in character using our own responses and the text.
